The city is 500,000 trees into its goal of planting 1 million trees as part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s efforts to make New York greener. Trees can clean and cool the air, and help reduce asthma. They also happen to look good. But even trees can be a menace if they’re not properly tended. Falling limbs in Central Park have killed, and streets can be littered with leaves and limbs after storms. Critics of the program say that especially now, when budgets are tight, the trees can wait, especially if they’re not being properly maintained.
